The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan (GHGRP) for the Santa Clara Valley Water District (Valley Water) outlines a comprehensive strategy to reduce Valley Water’s GHG emissions and show consistency with the state’s climate goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045. The GHGRP aims to reduce GHG emissions through various measures, including a transition to zero-emission fleets, water conservation, electrification of facilities, a requirement for zero-emission fuels in construction contracts, and other sustainability measures. In addition to these direct emissions reductions, the GHGRP takes advantage of Valley Water’s unique role in resource management as it restores salt marsh habitat in South San Francisco Bay. These restoration projects not only enhance local ecosystems but also play a crucial role in sequestering carbon emissions. Depending on the environment, fully restored wetlands can sequester as much carbon per acre as forests. Valley Water plans to restore over 2,000 acres of tidal marshes, accounting for about half of the reductions it needs to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.
