ClearPath 2.0: A New Era in Climate Action Planning

A powerful new tool is transforming how local governments approach climate planning. ClearPath 2.0, a next-generation climate planning platform developed by ICLEI USA and ClimateView and launched in May 2025, represents a significant advancement in climate planning tools by addressing long-standing challenges in climate action implementation through its innovative, interactive platform that makes complex climate data accessible and actionable.

Elk Grove’s ClearPath 2.0 Dashboard

What Makes ClearPath 2.0 Different

This comprehensive climate planning platform offers capabilities that overcome common obstacles:

  • Interactive dashboards: Both staff and community members can engage with climate data and track progress.
  • Integrated modeling: The platform captures how actions across different sectors interconnect and influence outcomes.
  • Dynamic updates: Changes to actions or emissions reductions are immediately reflected system-wide.
  • Resource optimization: Add-on tools help jurisdictions maximize impact within budget constraints.
  • Emissions visualization: Transition pathways show how different strategies contribute to reduction goals.
  • Collaborative features: Departments can seamlessly coordinate on shared climate initiatives.

ClearPath 2.0’s ability to transform technical data into visual, understandable insights is helping jurisdictions move from static climate plans to adaptive, living roadmaps. Its standardized yet customizable approach has the potential to create consistency in climate action development across local governments throughout the United States.

Real-World Application

The City of Elk Grove recently pioneered ClearPath 2.0 implementation through the City’s Climate Compass initiative, demonstrating how the platform enhances transparency, improves implementation tracking, and enables precise quantification of climate impacts. Explore Elk Grove’s Climate Compass Dashboard to see ClearPath 2.0 in action. The City’s experience shows how ClearPath 2.0 can standardize climate action development while remaining flexible enough to meet each community’s unique needs.

Transparency within climate action planning builds trust and accountability with our community. Allowing community members to see and understand how decisions generate climate pollution makes them more likely to support and participate in meaningful change. ClearPath 2.0 provides an engaging, transparent platform for the City to share the actions in our Climate Action Plan and provides understandable results to our community, which will help drive local engagement and involvement. Working with Ascent’s climate experts to implement this innovative platform was instrumental in bringing this vision to life—their deep understanding of both the technology and our community’s needs ensured we could deliver a dashboard that truly serves our residents.

Supporting Platform Implementation

As an early partner to ClimateView, we’ve gained unique insights through projects like Elk Grove’s Climate Compass into how jurisdictions can leverage ClearPath 2.0’s full potential—whether building a climate action plan from the ground up or enhancing existing initiatives. As climate planning evolves beyond traditional static documents, ClearPath 2.0 is helping communities create more responsive, accountable, and effective climate strategies.

Our Climate Team is excited to support other local governments interested in ClearPath 2.0’s potential to enhance their climate action planning. Whether you’re curious about the platform’s capabilities or ready to discuss implementation, Hannah Kornfeld can share insights from our hands-on experience and ongoing collaboration with the platform’s developers.
